In the middle of the busy city, there is an oasis of tranquility, a Chinese garden. Here, the exquisite construct of architecture, rockeries, water and greenery melds well human craft with nature. You wandering on the pebble paths, every single step leads to a different vista. Either in a wood pavilion, or on a stone bridge, or by a koi pond, or under a maple tree, calm and beauty imbue your heart and soul. Take some traditionally brewed tea and sit by the window of the tea house, the breeze brings over the aroma of the garden, making you almost believe that the paradise is near.

Much more than mere garden, the Geyuan (Bamboo) Garden is a microcosm of an ideal world. The complex at Yangzhou was constructed over generations with the lofty goal of helping visitors make sense of mankind’s place in nature. With exceptional care in framing views and composing alluring scenes, the interplay of the man-made buildings and pavilions with natural features like plants, trees, and fish, are juxtaposed intriguingly with those elements that are at once both and neither; inhabitable rock sculptures (rockeries) and carefully crafted ponds and lakes. The highly immersive quality of the landscape and spaces, fully attuned to the weather, season, and monthly lunar cycle leaves an indelible impression on those whose good fortune it is to have the honor of a visit.
